Can an FD 2x extender be used between an FD lens and an FD-to-EOS adapter?

I have a Sigma 400mm lens in Canon FD mount and an FD-to-EOS (EF) adapter. Can I add an FD 2x teleconverter/extender between the lens and the adapter, then mount the whole setup on an EOS camera? If so, are there any compatibility or image-quality issues to expect?

I Googled online for an answer and also asked some people at the local camera store if they had any idea. I came to know that Canon has two 2x FD extenders FD 2X-A and FD 2X-B. Apparently FD 2X-A are for lenses 300mm or higher and FD 2X-B are for lenses below 300mm.

So, I took a risk and bought a FD 2X-A extender from eBay and I was able to attach the extender to my Sigma 400mm lens. I then attached the FD to EOS converter to the extender.

I focused the combination on the moon to see if I could get infinity focus and I was happy when I was able to focus further from the moon.

Yes—if the teleconverter is compatible with your FD lens, it can be mounted between the FD lens and the FD-to-EOS adapter, then attached to the EOS body. In the reported setup, an FD 2X-A extender worked with a 400mm FD Sigma lens, and infinity focus was still achievable after adding the FD-to-EOS adapter.

For Canon FD extenders, the commonly cited distinction is that the FD 2X-A is intended for lenses around 300mm and longer, while the FD 2X-B is for shorter lenses.

Expect trade-offs:

  • 2x extender doubles focal length but costs about 2 stops of light
  • manual focus and manual/aperture-limited operation are likely
  • possible reduction in image quality versus using the lens alone
  • possible ghosting/reflections and limited or no EXIF data

So the answer is generally yes, but success depends on physical compatibility and you should expect a darker, more manual, and potentially lower-quality setup.
