Can an EOS 5D classic still be used for tethered shooting on macOS 10.11?

I upgraded my Mac to OS X 10.11.6 and can no longer find software that will let me shoot tethered with my original Canon EOS 5D. Lightroom is listed as compatible in some places, but in practice it does not work for me. Is there any software or workaround I may have missed, or is this a known compatibility issue with the 5D classic on newer versions of macOS?

The problem is an incompatibility between Canon Cameras and the newest MAC OS. Apple says it's Canon's problem to solve. I doubt Canon will ever update the needed drivers and firmware for a product as old as your EOS 5D classic that was discontinued almost a decade ago. This same issue also makes it impossible to transfer RAW+JPEG images to an OSX 10.10 or higher machine via the camera. The raw files will be corrupted.
For more, please see: Are Canon 450D RAW files (.cr2) different when shot in RAW+JPEG vs. RAW-only mode (from Lightroom's perspective)?

Probably not on macOS 10.11 with the original EOS 5D. The issue is generally a Canon/macOS compatibility problem rather than Lightroom alone. For older Canon bodies like the 5D classic, newer Mac OS versions rely on support Canon would need to provide, and it’s unlikely Canon will update drivers or firmware for a camera that old.
In practice, tethered shooting support for that model on newer macOS versions is effectively broken. Related transfer issues have also been reported with older Canon cameras on OS X 10.10 and later.
So your realistic options are limited to:
- using an older Mac/older OS version that still supports the camera
- using a different camera body for tethered client work
- treating an OS rollback as the fallback if tethering with this camera is essential
If tethering is mission-critical, relying on the EOS 5D classic with El Capitan is not a dependable setup.
