Can an adapter add camera control for focus or aperture on a manual Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 for Sony A7?

I bought a Sony A7 and a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4, then realized the lens is fully manual with no electronic communication to the camera. Is there any adapter or accessory that would let the camera control the lens aperture, autofocus, or both? If not, are there any practical workarounds for using this type of lens on the A7?

No, there is no such adapter. The Rokinon lens a manual-focus, manual-aperture lens. It does not have a built-in focus motor, nor can it interface with a focus motor in a camera body that might have one (the Sony a7 does not).

For this Rokinon, no adapter will add autofocus or camera-controlled aperture. It’s a fully manual lens, so it has no focus motor and no electronic interface for the camera to drive.

Some specialty lens modifications exist for certain older lenses, mainly to add limited electronic communication such as aperture reporting, focal length data, or camera integration features. But that depends on the specific lens design and is not a general adapter solution. It also does not mean autofocus can be added to a purely mechanical manual-focus lens.

In practice, with a manual lens on the Sony A7, you’ll use the aperture ring on the lens and focus manually. The A7’s manual-focus aids, such as focus magnification, are the main workaround and are often the best way to use lenses like this.
