I want to use a Sony NEX-5 for stop-motion work and need to know whether it can be controlled from a computer to take pictures directly. Is the NEX-5 supported for tethered or remote shooting from a Mac or Windows PC, or would I need to use another type of remote trigger instead?

No, NEX-5 is not supported for remote shooting while tethering with computer.

There are two free software programs from Sony both for Win and Mac, here you can see full list of supported cameras.

  1. Remote Camera Control supported devices
  2. Imaging Edge supported devices

For remote shooting I am using this IR Remote Controller, but there are more cheaper options as for example here

The Sony NEX-5 is generally not supported for tethered remote shooting from a computer. Based on Sony’s supported-camera lists for Remote Camera Control / Imaging Edge, the NEX-5 is not one of the models that can be controlled this way.

So if your goal is to trigger frames for stop motion directly from a Mac or PC, this camera is not a good fit for true computer-controlled capture.

A practical alternative is to use a remote trigger instead, such as an IR remote, to fire the shutter without touching the camera. That can still work for stop motion, but it is different from full tethering because you won’t have complete camera control from the computer.
