Can a Nikon Z6 charge over USB from a computer or 5V/2A phone charger?

Nikon's Z6 manual says to use the EH-7P AC adapter for in-camera USB charging. But when I connect the camera to a MacBook with the camera powered off, the orange charging LED turns on. I also tested a 5V/2A phone charger and it appears to charge. Is USB charging from a computer or standard phone charger supported, and if so, will it just be slower than the EH-7P?

It will probably charge the battery, but likely at a slower rate than Nikon's EH-7P USB-C battery charger.

According to a Nikon employee's response to the question titled "USB-C power specifications" at Nikon's product forum for the EH-7P (Nikon doesn't create direct permalinks for questions asked at its product forums), the EH-7P has a maximum rated output of 3A at 5V, which is 50% more power output than your phone's charger. Your Z6's battery will probably take about 50% longer to charge when using your phone's charger.

Yes — if the Z6’s charging light comes on with the camera off, it is charging over USB. Based on the information shared, a standard 5V/2A phone charger can charge the battery, but it will likely be slower than Nikon’s EH-7P.

The EH-7P is reported to supply up to 5V/3A, while your phone charger provides 5V/2A. Since 2A is about one-third less current than 3A, charging will generally take longer with the phone charger. A computer USB port may also charge the camera if it provides enough power, but it may be slower as well.

So the practical answer is: yes, it should work for charging with the camera off, but expect reduced charging speed compared with the Nikon adapter.
