Can a Nikon multiple-exposure RAW file be split back into the original shots?

I accidentally created a Nikon RAW file using the camera’s multiple-exposure mode, so two exposures were combined into a single NEF file about 2 seconds apart. Is there any way in Capture NX2 or similar software to separate that combined RAW back into the two original images?

No, there is no practical way of deducing one of images from "multiexposure" serie which results in single file.

Usually no. If the camera saved the multiple exposure as a single RAW/NEF file, the two exposures have already been merged, and there is no practical way to recover the original individual images afterward in Capture NX2 or similar software. You may be able to do some editing to reduce the visibility of one exposure, but not truly split the file back into the two separate source frames.
