On a Nikon D3500, is there any way to see the camera-to-subject focus distance in Live View or in the viewfinder when pressing the shutter button halfway? More generally, do cameras show the actual focus distance they use for exposure or flash calculations?

It's saved in the exif data when the photograph is taken, as Focus Distance, but I know of no way to access it directly from the camera, either before or after taking the shot.

Generally, no—the Nikon D3500 does not display the actual focus distance in Live View or in the viewfinder while focusing. Some cameras and lenses record an approximate focus distance in the photo’s EXIF metadata after the image is taken, often labeled something like “Focus Distance,” but that is not usually available as a live on-screen readout on this camera. Also, the recorded value may be approximate rather than an exact measured distance. So if you need that information, you would typically have to check the image metadata afterward rather than seeing it directly before taking the shot.
