Can a Nikon D300 use any standard USB Mini-B cable for photo transfer?

I normally transfer photos from my Nikon D300 to a Windows 7 computer using the supplied USB cable. I’ve also successfully used a Garmin cable with the same USB Mini-B connector. However, another Mini-B cable caused Windows to detect a USB device but fail to identify it correctly.
The camera seems fine, and reading the CF card with a card reader works normally. Are USB Mini-B cables standardized for data transfer, or do some cables with the same connector only support charging or use different wiring?

Usb is a standard, so in theory all usb to usb mini cables should be the same. In reality tho some are different. Some are built only to charge and therefore wont transfer data, and it wouldnt surprise me if some manufacturers use the usb mini plug but wire it specifically for their device.
If you go to a store and buy a usb mini cable it should work fine though. It might be worth buying another one and keeping it with your camera so you're never caught without one.

Yes—USB Mini-B is a standardized connector, so a properly made standard USB-A to Mini-B cable should work with the Nikon D300 for data transfer.
If one cable fails while others work, the most likely explanations are:
- the cable is charge-only and does not have the data lines connected,
- the cable is faulty or damaged,
- or it is poorly made and not wired to the USB standard.
So the issue is probably not that the D300 needs a special Nikon-only cable. A normal, standards-compliant USB Mini-B data cable should work. If you need a reliable backup, buy a generic Mini-B data cable from a reputable seller and keep it with the camera.
