Can a Nikon Coolpix S70 capture motion trails, and how?

I want to photograph motion trails from a moving subject, such as a thrown ball or a person running, using a point-and-shoot camera like the Nikon Coolpix S70. Is this possible with that camera, and what settings or shooting method would help create the effect?

Unfortunately, due to a lack of a manual or shutter priority mode on the S70, it may be difficult to capture motion in the way you describe.

If there are no 'scene' modes available that provide a long shutter speed your best bet may be to mount the camera on a tripod, disable the flash & set the ISO to its lowest (if possible) then shoot in a low light situation. This will hopefully force the camera into a long enough shutter speed to create some form of motion trail.

Yes, but with the Coolpix S70 it may be difficult because it lacks full manual or shutter-priority control. Motion trails usually require a slower shutter speed, and without direct shutter control you have to encourage the camera to choose one.

Best approach:

  • Put the camera on a tripod or stable surface.
  • Turn flash off.
  • Use the lowest ISO available.
  • Shoot in low light so the camera is forced to use a longer shutter speed.
  • Check whether any scene mode allows longer exposures.

This may produce some blur or trail from a moving subject, but results will be limited compared with a camera that offers manual exposure or shutter-priority mode. If the camera has no scene mode that supports long shutter speeds, there may not be a reliable way to get strong motion-trail effects on this model.
