Can a Godox X5-N trigger a Nikon SB-600 off-camera with a D5600?

I have a Nikon D5600, which does not have commander mode. Can a Godox X5-N transmitter trigger a Nikon SB-600 off-camera by itself, or do I need additional equipment?

Not with the equipment that you have. Since the SB-600 can only be triggered by a hotshoe or optically, you'll need a receiver for it to bring it into the Godox X system. Their current offering for that is the XR; the X1R should also work for that.

You put the flash into the receiver's hotshoe, you pair the receiver with the X5 transmitter and that's it - it should now work remotely. From what I read the limitation would be that the receiver would have to be in the same group as the iT32 that comes with the X5, so if you want to use both, consider that. A more full-featured standalone trigger would allow you more flexibility.

Not by itself. The Nikon SB-600 cannot join the Godox X radio system directly; it can only be triggered from its hot shoe or by Nikon optical wireless. So a Godox X5-N transmitter alone will not fire it off-camera.

To use the SB-600 with the Godox X system, you need a compatible Godox receiver under the flash, such as an X1R-style receiver. The setup is: mount the SB-600 on the receiver, pair the receiver with the X5-N transmitter, and then trigger it remotely.

So the short answer is: yes, you can use the SB-600 off-camera with your D5600 and a Godox transmitter, but only if you add a receiver.
