I’d like more resolution but want to keep using my current camera body because it already fits an expensive underwater housing. Is it possible to upgrade a camera by replacing its sensor with a higher-resolution one, or are sensors effectively fixed to the body design? If not, are there practical alternatives for getting more resolution without replacing the whole setup?

Cameras are built around the sensor: firmware, processing unit, exposure measurement system, AF system... so you are really asking about taking the innards of a recent camera and putting them in an old body.
