Are there compact digital cameras with remote shutter options?

I used to travel with a compact 35mm Minolta Freedom Zoom 125 that had a remote shutter, which was great for setting the camera on a small tripod or a rock for self-timer-style shots. Moving to digital, I haven’t seen many pocket or non-SLR cameras advertised with remotes. Do compact digital cameras still offer remote shutter control, and if so is it usually infrared or wired?

Luckily, you are wrong. There are plenty of non-DSLRs with remotes, either wired or infrared red.

Search for cameras with infrared remotes and look at the breakdown by size on the left. As of today, their are 4 ultra-compacts, 7 compacts and 7 SLDs. Do the same for cameras with wired remotes and you will see the smallest is the Olympus ZX-1 among a number of larger options.

Yes—compact, non-DSLR digital cameras do exist with remote shutter capability. Remote support is less universal than on interchangeable-lens cameras, but it hasn’t disappeared.

On smaller cameras, the most common options are:

  • infrared remotes
  • wired remotes on some models

Availability varies by camera size and model, so the key is to check the camera’s specs for “remote control,” “infrared remote,” or “wired remote terminal.” In other words, the issue is not that compact cameras no longer support remotes, but that you need to shop specifically for models that include that feature.
