I'm looking at the Minolta AF 500mm f/8 Reflex and the Sony SAL500F80/SAL500F8 autofocus mirror lens for A-mount. Aside from the Sony rebrand and the likelihood that newer Sony copies may be in better cosmetic condition, did Sony make any meaningful changes to the optical design, autofocus mechanism, or build materials? Or are they effectively the same lens?

Based on the detailed specifications and the results they produce they appear to be identical: http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/Sony-AF-Reflex-500mm-F8_lens310.html http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/Minolta-AF-Reflex-500mm-F8_lens25.html

The only way to be 100% sure would be to disassemble them side by side, but based on what information is available, them being the same is extremely likely.

From the available specs and reported image results, they appear to be effectively the same lens. There’s no clear evidence in the provided information that Sony changed the optical formula, autofocus system, or construction in any meaningful way beyond branding.

Without a side-by-side teardown, no one can be 100% certain about minor internal manufacturing differences, but based on published specifications and user comparisons, the Sony version is extremely likely to be a straight continuation of the Minolta design.

So in practical terms, choose based on condition, price, and sample quality rather than expecting performance differences between the Minolta and Sony versions.
