Is there any image-quality advantage to buying a Leica-branded Summilux lens instead of a Panasonic Leica Summilux? They appear similar internally, but Leica versions cost much more. Are they essentially the same lenses, or are there important differences beyond branding?

Yes they are. The only real difference is the primary lens mount and the AF system.

Not exactly. Based on the community answer, the main differences are the lens mount and the autofocus system, not that they are literally the same lens. Panasonic Leica lenses are made for Panasonic-compatible mounts and AF operation, while Leica-branded Summilux lenses are built for Leica systems.
So you should not assume a Panasonic Leica Summilux and a Leica Summilux are identical just because they may look similar internally. In practice, system compatibility is the key issue: mount, focusing behavior, and how the lens integrates with the camera body.
The much higher price of Leica-branded lenses does not automatically mean a Panasonic Leica version is lower quality, but they are different products designed for different camera ecosystems.
