Are lenses used on a Nikon D5200/D5300 compatible with a D7000/D7100?

I’m buying a Nikon body and lenses separately. If a lens was used on a D5200 or D5300, will it also work on a D7000 or D7100? I want to make sure I choose lenses that are compatible and can autofocus properly.

Short answer: Yes. The models all have DX sensors, and since the lenses were bought for a D5300/D5200, they'll likely have an AF motor built in, so you won't have problems mounting them on any other Nikon DX camera, including D7000/D7100.

Yes — lenses that work on a Nikon D5200/D5300 should also work on a D7000/D7100. All of these are Nikon DX-format bodies, so mounting and normal use are generally compatible.

The key autofocus difference is this: the D5200/D5300 rely on lenses with a built-in focus motor for autofocus, while the D7000/D7100 also have an in-body focus motor that can drive some older lenses.

So:

  • A lens that autofocuses on a D5200/D5300 should autofocus on a D7000/D7100.
  • But some older lenses that autofocus on a D7000/D7100 may not autofocus on a D5200/D5300.

For Nikon-branded lenses, AF-S lenses have a built-in motor and are a safe choice for both camera lines. With third-party lenses, motor naming varies by brand, so check carefully whether the lens has its own AF motor if you want autofocus on a D5200/D5300.
