Are Canon USM and STM lenses compatible with the EOS 550D/T2i?

I want to upgrade the lens on my Canon EOS 550D/T2i and am considering an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 as a general-purpose option. Is there any compatibility issue using a Canon USM lens instead of an STM lens on this camera body, especially for still photography?

Any Canon EF or EF-S lens made since the EOS system was introduced in 1987 is fully compatible with your EOS Rebel T2i/550D. This is true regardless of whether the lens in question uses a "micro-motor", USM, or STM to move the lens' focussing elements.

Yes. Your Canon EOS 550D/T2i is fully compatible with Canon EF and EF-S lenses, including lenses that use micro-motor, USM, or STM autofocus systems. There is no special compatibility problem with USM versus STM on this camera for still photos.
The main difference is not whether the lens works, but how the autofocus motor behaves. USM and STM are just different focus-drive technologies. Both can be used normally on the 550D, so you can choose based on the lens’ focal length, features, and how you prefer the autofocus to feel.
