Affordable wide/normal prime options for Canon APS-C

I like the value of Canon’s 50mm f/1.8, but on an APS-C body it feels too tight for general use. I’m looking for a good-value prime around 30mm or wider for Canon APS-C, ideally inexpensive. Manual-focus options are fine if the image quality is worth it. What are the best budget-friendly choices?

If you are looking for a fast prime that is the equivalent to 50mm on APS-C, you are looking for the Sigma 30mm 1.4. There is also the Canon 28mm 1.8, but it is slower and slightly softer than the Sigma, while being a tad more expensive.
The downside is that the Sigma runs about $450, so not really cheap. Unfortunately, there is no fast, cheap, wide angle prime like the nifty fifty.
But I think the Sigma is what you are looking for.

For Canon APS-C, there isn’t really a direct “nifty fifty” equivalent that is both very fast and very cheap. If you want a normal-field fast prime, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is the closest match and is commonly recommended, but it’s notably more expensive than the 50mm f/1.8. The Canon 28mm f/1.8 is another option, though it’s generally considered a bit softer and not cheaper than the Sigma.
If low cost is the priority, the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is a strong budget choice. It’s compact, affordable, and gives a wider field of view that suits APS-C well.
Another good-value option is the Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM. It’s not as wide as 30mm, but it is wider than 50mm on APS-C, and users often like its quiet, fast STM focusing, compact size, and solid value.
So: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 if you want speed, EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM if you want the best budget wide/normal option, and 40mm f/2.8 STM if you want a compact, inexpensive step wider than 50mm.
