I'm looking for a camera stabilizer for a very light compact/point-and-shoot camera, ideally a gimbal-and-counterweight style setup for something well under 1 kg. The well-known options I've found seem expensive relative to the camera itself, and some stores only suggest simple grips. What lower-cost alternatives are worth considering for very small cameras?

If you want, you can build one yourself. There are many DIY tutorials around, but I made myself one of those.

You can scale it down if it's too big or heavy for your needs.

For very light compact cameras, there are two realistic alternatives mentioned:

  1. DIY stabilizers: A homemade counterweight/gimbal-style stabilizer can be a practical low-cost option. Many DIY tutorials exist, and you can scale the design down for a small point-and-shoot.

  2. Modern handheld gimbals: Electronic 3-axis handheld gimbals have become a lighter, more affordable alternative to older professional stabilizer systems. The key is to choose one rated for your camera’s size and weight.

A simple grip is not the same thing as a stabilizer—it may improve handling, but it will not provide the smoothing effect of a true gimbal or balanced stabilizer.

So if budget is the main issue, a DIY rig is likely the cheapest route; if you want convenience and better stabilization, look for a lightweight handheld gimbal compatible with compact cameras.
