Megapixels:
A megapixel is one million pixels. It is commonly used to describe the resolution of digital cameras. For example, a 7.2 megapixel camera is capable of capturing roughly 7,200,000 pixels. The higher the megapixel number, the more detail the camera can capture. Therefore, the megapixel count is a significant specification to look for when buying a digital camera.

The Canon XF100 Camcorder is a great choice for professional videographers. This camera comes with a Canon 10x HD video lens that offers a zoom range of 30.4–304mm. The 2.07 MP CMOS sensor provides high color sensitivity and minimal noise. Moreover, the Canon DIGIC DV III image processor improves the shading and tonal gradations. You can pair the camera with other XF100 or XF105 camcorders to shoot a stereoscopic 3D video by using the built-in 3D assist functions. The camera offers full HD video recording at 60 interlaced frames per second with a maximum bitrate of 50 Mbps. With the SuperRange optical image stabilizer, your handheld footage becomes smooth when shooting handheld. You can record a particular shot in fast or slow motion. The EF recording codec used in the camera is compatible with major industry manufactured non-linear editing software.

Optics and Focus

The Canon XF100 camcorder uses a 10× HD zoom lens that provides a 35mm equivalent focal range of 30.4–304mm. You can adjust the lens aperture from f/1.8–2.8 to record bright videos even in dim light. The combination of an external AF sensor and Canon's legendary auto focus system gives quick and precise results no matter in which light conditions you are shooting. The 8-blade iris makes the shallow depth of field more pleasing by creating a rounded bokeh. Also, the additional blades minimize light diffraction. You can extend the zoom range by 1.5×, 3×, and 6× with the built-in digital teleconverter. The natural density filter makes it easy to adjust the exposure by blocking the light from reaching the camera sensor.

Sensor and Screen

This Canon camcorder has a 1/3-inch CMOS Image Sensor that lets it capture vibrant pictures with low noise. You can use the 3.5-inch LCD for composing the shot, which gives a live view of the scene in 920K dot resolution. The focus assist functions on the LCD aid you when tuning the focus for the current scene. You can use the 260K dot electronic viewfinder for the same purpose as the LCD. The brightness, contrast, color, and backlight can be adjusted. Also, the viewfinder angle can be varied up or down at 68°.

Image and Video

The camera can record full HD videos at a maximum frame rate of 60i. The DIGIC DV III image processor improves the shadows and tonal gradation. It also provides the custom picture settings with low power consumption. A particular scene can be recorded in fast or slow motion. The SuperRange optical image stabilizer smoothens the camera shakes when shooting handheld. Other filming functions include interval and infra-red recording.

Other Features

There are customization options for the camera functions, picture settings, and display. A stereo microphone is integrated into the camera to record audio in 16-bit PCM format at 48kHz. Two XLR audio inputs with +48V phantom power are also provided on the camera. The dual CF card slots offer relay recording, hot swapping, file copy and backup, and pre-recording facilities. You can check the video output in the built-in waveform monitor. The intelligent battery system conveys the remaining time with respect to the power left in the 7.4VDC battery pack.

Focusing System:
The type of focusing system used to capture a sharp image. Some simple cameras have fixed (infinity) focus. Most modern cameras have autofocus systems which determine the distance to the subject automatically. There are two main types of autofocus: active autofocus, where an infrared light (or a sonar pulse) is emitted by the camera and reflected by the subject, and passive autofocus, where the image transmitted by the lens is analysed for its sharpness by a detector inside the camera.

Minimum Illumination: 4.5 lux (full AUTO mode, 1/60 shutter speed, +24dB gain); 1.6 lux (Manual mode, 1/4 shutter speed, +33dB gain)
Minimum Illumination:
Minimum illumination indicates the minimum amount of light required to see a ‘useful’ image generated by a camera. It is measured with a light meter and the specification is expressed in lux. When comparing minimum illumination specifications, it is important to know the conditions under which measurements were made, because the specifications vary with parameters such as video levels, shutter speed, gain, and F-number.
