Answering the demand for an internally zooming, internal focus F2.8 telephoto zoom lens, Canon engineers listened to the market and delivered. Whether you are a sports photographer shooting against the glass at a hockey game, or balancing a camera and lens on a gimbal for a video production this 70-200 will definitely be a professionals “must have” in their kit. Taking the same build and case as the recently introduced and wildly popular RF24-105 F2.8 L IS USM Z this lens will be a workhorse for both still and video creators. Photographers will notice the very short zoom ring rotation- making quick changes from 70-200mm with just a push or pull of your thumb. A manual, lockable iris ring is also added to this lens particularly for those video creators, but on the EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R1, will work for still photography also. The addition of two lens function buttons that are customizable as well as a control ring for even more function customization, allowing quick changes to lens or camera settings.
By taking advantage of the large diameter RF mount and short back focus, the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z is able to achieve a maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout its entire zoom range. This enables you to continuously shoot up to the frequently used 200mm without switching lenses, opening a world of possibilities for both photo and movie shooting. But, why stop there when we don’t have to? This new lens is compatible with both RF1.4x and RF2.0x Extenders for even more range of 280mm and 400mm respectively.
The RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z crosses the worlds of photography and movies. The optional Power Zoom Adapters PZ-E2 and PZ-E2B enable smooth, high-precision zoom control during movie shooting, that can even be operating remotely with the Canon Camera Connect and EOS Utility apps. Plus, attachment and detaching can be managed without the use of a special tool. The Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2B comes equipped with a 20-pin port for compatibility with cinema or broadcast lens accessories such as the Digital Zoom Demand ZSD-300D or the Digital Focus Demand FPD-400D. This lens and Power Zoom Adapter combination makes unassisted single-person video shooting operation easy and within reach.

With eleven aperture blades and a large f/2.8 aperture, the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z produces a beautiful, almost circular bokeh effect — even when stopped-down, thanks to an 11-blade aperture. The wide aperture also allows for faster shutter speeds in low light situations and helps prevent subject blurs.
The RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z is equipped with an iris ring (for aperture control). This allows videographers and photographers to manually control exposure adjustment and the degree of background blur while shooting, with click-less, smooth operation — similar to the operability in a cinema lens.
With a minimum focusing distance of approximately 1.6 ft./0.49m, the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z lens helps you get close to your subjects. The maximum magnification of 0.3x at 200mm allows you to capture subtle details more expansively and clearly. Focus shifts during zooming are minimal — plus, it supports focus breathing correction, in which the camera digitally corrects for changes in angle of view caused by focus movement during video recording, especially during closeup shooting.
For consistently sharp results, the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z features built-in optical Image Stabilization, providing enhanced shake reduction for up to 5.5 stops of shake correction. When paired with an EOS R-series camera that has In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), the Coordinated IS allows for up to 7.5 stops of correction4 at the center of the image. This means more reliable handheld performance and clear detail in low-light situations, without having to increase the ISO or slow your shutter speed. Additionally, an IS Mode switch is available for quickly switching between the three IS Modes available. Mode 1 for capturing stationary subjects correcting shake in all directions, Mode 2 for panning with moving subjects correcting shake only in one direction, and Mode 3 for irregularly moving subjects where IS calculations start when the shutter button is pressed halfway but the stabilization is only activated when fully pressing the shutter button – making it easier to follow the subject.
The RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z Features a focus drive system with two nano USM motors, powering both the autofocus unit, and a “floating” optics assembly which move independently to ensure maximum image quality. Nano USM motors provides quiet and smooth AF, especially useful during movie recording. In addition, the Nano USM maintains focus while zooming to suppress aberration fluctuations during high-speed burst or movie shooting.
With its Internal zooming, internal focusing, fixed length lens barrel design and balanced center of gravity, the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z provides excellent handling for any shooting style and is especially advantageous when using accessories for shooting video. The lens comes with a tripod mount that can be easily attached and detached with a lock release button, without the need of a special tool. Also available is the LH-E1 lens holder (bundled), which supports the lens when combining with a rig.
The RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z boasts amazing durability and endurance you’d expect from an L-series lens. The lens barrel does not move during zooming or focusing; both are achieved entirely internally. Weather-resistant sealing is applied to areas such as the operation rings and switch panel to help prevent water and dust from entering the unit. Fluorine coating is applied on the front lens to prevent water, oil and other surface residue like fingerprints from sticking to the lens, which facilitates quick and easy wiping without the use of solvents. This dust- and water-resistant design allows for outstanding performance even in inclement weather conditions.
