WWDC 2013: What Will iOS 7 Do For Photographers?

Another year, another round of Apple's week-long developer's conference. This year, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Senior VP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi discussed the majority of the updates in iOS 7, the next iteration of the iPhone and iPad operating system. There's lots of non-camera features to be excited about: iTunes Radio, a simplified and rather nice looking (in this blogger's opinion) interface, Airdrop integration...the list continues. In line with that, iPhoneographers have cause to celebrate a bit, but perhaps not as much as they'd like.

We kick off camera updates with a revised app interface, which now allows for built-in filters to be used on the photos. The extent of these filters is not yet known, nor how they will compete with the likes of Instagram and other photo manipulation apps. Something that Apple didn't quite touch on, but is worth mentioning, is the speed of the camera app on iOS 7. As demonstrated by Photocritic, the camera app will do away with the shutter animation, thus making it VERY fast; the phone can take photos as fast as you can tap the shutter button. The dropping of the shutter animation falls in line with iOS 7's lack of a "skeuomorphic" design - that is, without physical metaphors like the classic-looking Compass app and the green felt design of the Game Center. In essence, it'll be nice to not only have one of the best mobile cameras on the market, but also be able to utilize its ability for speedy shooting.

The second update is a refresh to the "Photos" app, which will now organize your photos into "moments". Pinch out to see your photos in an album based on location and date. Pinch out further to see these albums organized into month and year. Thanks to Airdrop, you can share photos in an album among other iPhone-toting friends and not have to, in a thinly-veiled jab at Samsung, "walk around a room bumping phones".

Since Apple has a tendency to announce all of its upcoming products at the very beginning of the WWDC, it looks as if we won't be hearing about a new iPhone until late this summer or fall. Whatever a new device may bring - a new camera, namely - is still shrouded in secrecy. Until then, sit tight.
