Wedding photography: Tête-à-Tête with Vanessa Joy

Wedding photography is one of the most professional genres of photography that a lot of shutterbugs out there practice in order to support themselves financially. Like other genres, wedding photography too has undergone evolution in terms of technique and approach.

There are two major approaches to Wedding photography: Traditional and photojournalistic. Traditional photography is about classically posed images that require an absolute control on photographer’s part. Photojournalistic approach gives much more freedom and mostly, candid shooting with a lot of spatial exploration take place. Another trend that’s picking up is fashion based approach in which photographer combines the elements of candid photography and classical poses to give the feeling of editorial fashion pictures.

Unique photo interviewed a well –known wedding photographer, Vanessa, and asked her to share her experiences and opinions on the new trends, the kind of equipment that she feels are best for shooting weddings and a couple of questions on personal aspirations.

Q. Why did you choose wedding photography as your niche?

A. I fell into it because my high school photography teacher, who I learned my photographic roots from, was a wedding photographer on the side. I started working for him after I graduated and simple fell in love with this high-paced industry.

Q. What are the new and untouched trends in the world of wedding photography? A. There's so much out there right now it's hard to find anything that's untouched. I think what we need to come back to as a "new" goal in wedding photography, is to get back to a positive and creative mind-set where us photographers can be awed by weddings that seem just like every other wedding we photograph simply because we're choosing to look at them from a fresh perspective rather than a "been there done that" one.

Q. Which camera do you feel has been specially designed for wedding photography? A. I use the Canon 1D Mark IV, but so many camera's today have been designed for run-and-gun style photography like on a wedding day. Any camera that can give you high ISO capabilities to shoot in a low-lit church to a great dynamic range to shoot in bright sun is what you'll want to have by your side when shooting a wedding.

Q. Name a special celebrity couple whose wedding you would like to shoot and why? A. I would love to photograph Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's wedding. Not because they're beautiful people, but because their lives, and how they've enriched the lives of their adopted children, have such story to it that it would be an incredible event to capture.

Q. Which is your dream location to shoot a destination wedding? A. I would like to shoot a wedding in Italy. Fields, vineyards and a glass of the best wine in the world after a hard-day's work sounds like a dream to me!
