In the 1800's, photography clubs consisted of only well-to-do "gentlemen" enthusiasts with expensive hobbies. It wasn't long after that they began accepting women into their groups, probably because they needed new ideas and a fresh outlook toward the medium. This doesn't go without saying that women have made significant contributions to photography since it's inception. Berenice Abbott, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, Cindy Sherman, and Annie Leibovitz are some of the most well known photographers around the world and they all happen to be women. Does this mean that women possess some traits that make them better photographers? Well this is debatable, but were not here to argue who's better than who. Unique Photo had the pleasure to provide a little column in the very first issue of North Jersey Woman magazine on women's perspectives and advantages in photography. It does make a good point that woman seem to have an easier time photographing children... Maybe it has something to do with their maternal instincts, who knows?
