Studio photography isn't all lights, camera, action...if you've ever spent countless hours perfecting a four light set up, you'll know that very well. Despite digital's instant gratification, you have to take your time in the studio or else you'll run into problems later down the line. One of the last things on our minds during a labor-intensive shoot is legal work. You have your model ready for his or her close up, but did you remember to take some precautionary steps that might save your rear should you become entangled in a legal battle? If your brain went to static for a second, don't tune out. This is important for any photographer who shoots portraits, whether it be casual portraits for a business or a full-fledged commercial shoot.
Like any self-assessment, you have to ask yourself some questions pertaining to your model. If the images you take are easily recognizable to the likeness of said model, you'll need a release form. Even in cases like a hand shoot, if the image is being used for commercial means or an advertisement then you definitely need a press release. Like any legal terminology, it can become a little convoluted when groups or underage models are involved. It's always helpful to have someone break it down (much better than I ever could).
Luckily for you Unique Photo has just the answer. Manny Cabo, a world renown portraitist, will be teaching a class at Unique University on topics such as release forms, ownership rights, and more. The Legalities of Model Photography class will be held on Saturday, November 17th at 11AM. If you're serious about studio portraiture this is one class you don't want to miss. Sign up here.
This class might be a helpful prerequisite for another seminar Manny will be giving: The Female Nude: A Timeless Aesthetic with Manny Cabo. For those who enjoy the female form, you might find this one enticing. Although these models don't need assistance from Photoshop, this seminar will go over how to create beautiful nude portraits through proper technique from pre to post. He will go over examples of lighting setups, as well as how to retouch them later in the Unique Photo Computer Lab. Did we mention that you'll get to shoot an assortment of models, both au naturale and in lingerie? The class is also on November 17th starting at 1PM. Spots for this class fill up quickly, so sign up today.
