Philippe Echaroux has been making a name for himself as a commercial photographer and celebrity portraitist. As if documenting the lifestyles of the rich and famous wasn't enough, he decided to take on a personal project which had been brewing in his head. What if he took the lights out of the studio and onto the streets? What if the unsuspecting models were everyday people and he used his lighting techniques to make them look like stars? This video shows him searching for subjects on the street and then calling over his portable studio for a quick portrait. The set-up seems pretty simple for an impromptu studio session. Looks like he's using a Hasselblad 503CW with digital back that's triggering one portable Elinchrom strobe with softbox attachment, black "reflector" to absorb some light/give shadow on the right and a fairly small piece of beat-up gray backdrop. Sounds like a fun project, but how easy do you think it would be to get someone on the streets of NYC to stop what they're doing and have their portrait taken? Perhaps an accent would help...
