Sony will be shutting down Sony Optiarc Inc., its CD- and DVD- drive manufacturing subsidiary, as part of its worldwide restructuring effort after posting a net loss of $5.8 billion in 2011. This leaves the Tokyo-based tech giant to pursue their popular gaming division and focus on developing new camera technologies.
Mobile photographers globally should be buzzing right about now due to the recently announced Exmor RS, the "world's first" stacked CMOS image sensor, which will now undoubtedly become one of Sony's top projects. The Exmor RS line will improve image quality in cell phone and tablet cameras with features like superior low-light capabilities and the new RGBW color coding, but the primary feature is the compact size achieved by stacking the sensors on top of one another. We're certain that once this technology takes off, it will find its way into Sony's Cyber-Shot line.
