Social media is anything but static. While cornerstones like Twitter and Facebook have been industry titans for years, the periphery of the social media world seems to be in a constant state of flux. Consider, for a second, all of the social media platforms you have heard of over the past few years...while we don't use them all (at least we shouldn't - if you do, go for a hike), there's no denying that they came from virtually nowhere, like mini Big-Bangs in the digital universe.
One such example of recent times is Vine, the six-second video platform that lets you share clips among your Twitter devotees. A few months ago, it was regarded as a whimsical add-on to your social media experience, and many people - myself included - largely forgot about it. Well, not anymore. This past Friday, Vine surpassed Instagram handily in total shares through Twitter. While Instagram brought in 2.14 million shares, the little-video-app-that-could steamed ahead to 2.36 million shares.

So what does this mean for us, photographers? Well, I wouldn't read too far into things yet, especially since the growth is largely attributed to Vine being released for Android recently. But, if you do any marketing for your photography business/hobby through social media channels (as you should), it's time to give Vine a serious look. Who knows where it - or any social media platform, honestly - will be in five years? Until then, though, it's best to target your efforts to where the action is. Me? I think I'll sign up.
