Oh, Google. Google and I have had our ups and downs, but usually they woo me back with something nifty or useful. This seems to be one such occasion that falls into the former, even though this particular Google service has yet to be implemented. Google has filed a patent that will allow your phone to change its camera settings based on local weather. If it's cloudy, you'll see a warmer white balance, more saturated colors, and so on. No word on whether or not the phone will autodetect whether or not you're inside, as that could case some issues.
The only way I could really see myself using this is if smartphone manufacturers continue releasing cameras with no manual control. Additionally, it'd be nice if smartphones in the future had timelapse controls, which would make this feature useful. Still, my response is pretty mixed regarding this patent. As with all of the ambitious goals that Google rolls out, let's see how this is implemented before drawing conclusions.
A cameraphone controlled by the weather. Micromanaging or usable function?
