With all the excitement over the upcoming 2012 Olympics, photographers have been gearing up in hopes of obtaining the perfect shot. Since we all can't jam pack ourselves into jolly ol' London, the accessibility of media coverage is important as ever for the folks back home. With the recent firestorm concerning one photographer's attempt to push the boundaries on typical athlete portraiture, we're learning that photography is as much of a cut-throat sport as any of the games. While I'm still not sure if this was an act of sincerity or pure trolling, I'm just going to say that this photographer did a good job at garnishing attention. One thing is for certain: everyone on the internet thinks they can do a better job.
Interestingly enough, we might not have anyone to blame for "edgy" photographs of our athletes. Coming this summer we'll have images taken by robotic cameras hoisted high above the arenas. Going where most photographers would be subject to acrophobia and/or falling from great heights, these remotely triggered cameras will be controlled by joystick-like controllers from the comfort and safety of the ground. They might not be the self-aware robots that the future of photojournalism is asking for, but they will definitely be a great tool to get interesting shots from unique (most likely unflattering) angles. Warm up your pocket wizards...let the games begin.
