One of the things that really defined the social activism of the last 50 years or so is the LGBT movement. In some countries, the fight to appropriate the rights of LGBT community is still on, and beginning to pick up its full force. Here in the United States, the same-sex marriage is legal throughout since 2003, and the law affords them the legal protection and rights in the form of anti-discrimination, family, and other such related laws. From a wedding photography experts’ point of view, it is important that we recognize the need to bring same-sex weddings to the fore. In the past, we’ve heard cases of photographers refusing to shoot gay weddings, which led to a legal dispute regarding the justness of such a refusal. Anyway, to dispel any wrong-founded reasons you might have about photographing a gay or lesbian wedding, Unique University brings you, this Saturday, a session with an award-winning gay wedding photographer, Steven Rosen.
The problem around same-sex weddings is far more complicated than it seems. A commission to photograph a same-sex wedding comes with its own challenges and expectations, and quite different from a normal wedding. Also, this large client base looks for photographers that can meet their expectations. We are sure Rosen’s experience will come handy to clear some of our doubts.
A different client poses the demand for different marketing strategies. It includes all sorts of things, right from designing a LGBT-friendly website to offering wedding pictures and packages that can appeal to the community. It must also give way to candid photographs of couples expressing their genders fluidly, and such moments must be highlighted as boldly as possible. Then there is the question of privacy as well, which becomes quite sensitive when it comes to same-sex wedding pictures. All these things, small and big, will come up in Unique University’s session on Saturday, and we will have Steven with us to give an insight on these sensitive issues.
A word about Steven: Steven is gay, and a long-time advocate of LGBT rights and same-sex marriage. He has been photographing same-sex weddings, even before the enactment of the marriage equality law, and when the lawmakers did pass the law, he had scores of wedding pictures in his portfolio to display. He has shot over 80 same-sex weddings, and through accumulated experience, has a great understanding of the things that go into pulling off the commission to shoot a same-sex wedding successfully, and the professional rewards of working with the LGBT couples.
You can attend the session on photographing same-sex weddings with Steven Rosen by simply registering on the site. Also, feel free to share this article to interest fellow photographers to attend the workshop.
