Allow me to introduce myself to begin my inaugural post for Unique; my name is Ciara (pronounced Key-ar-ah) and you'll find my posts ranging from Unique University course reviews to exclusive photographer interviews, offering an objective perspective of a fellow photography enthusiast.  I'm thrilled about the recent opportunity I had to sit in on Michael Downey's Understanding Your Digital SLR Camera I: Basics course this week.  This course is filling up faster than ever as more consumers purchase their first DSLR, so be sure take a peek at the course schedule and book early. Rest assured, whether you take this course during the midday or evening time slot, Michael will keep you engaged, entertained, and educated.  He combines teaching basic technical information with photographed examples to offer deeper comprehension of simple techniques. Taking the course a step further, the instructor leaves ample time in the class for practical application; students take out their camera (be sure to bring it and not leave it in the car!) and apply the lessons on light and motion.  This combination of teaching methods ensures you will leave the class with improved confidence in your ability to be a photographer and a trick or two up your sleeve.

Michael Downey does an incredible job reminding you that photography is an expression of Science and Art sharing a milkshake with two straws.  Utilizing your camera to capture light properly is the fundamental technique each photographer must grasp and this course is great atmosphere to confirm understanding.   In this class, no question is silly or laughable because it truly is for people who want to know what "TV" or "AF" means; no one understands the photography acronym system at birth! By the end of two hours, I felt everyone in the room was ready to shoot their cameras on Manual mode and properly expose their photos.
Keep in mind that Unique University doesn't constrain you to pre-requisites like high schools or colleges.  If you already feel comfortable adjusting your ISO and effectively using your camera's settings, then you're not required to take the Basics course, so check the course offerings for the advanced curriculum that focuses on Exposure and Metering or Composition.  There's something for all photographers on their list, including excursions and painted models, so don't delay!
This course will ensure the only Auto mode affiliated with your photography will be your Out-of Office email because you'll be taking full advantage of your Digital SLR!
