Canon EOS R8 Mark II: Specs, Price and What's New

Canon EOS R8 Mark II arrives as a compact full-frame RF mirrorless camera with IBIS, 24.2MP, 4K 60p video, and preorder pricing from $1,899.

Canon EOS R8 Mark II Camera - Body Only

What Canon is announcing

Canon has announced the Canon EOS R8 Mark II Camera - Body Only and the Canon R8 Mark II with 24-50mm F/4.5-6.3 IS STM Kit. Both are full-frame mirrorless cameras in the RF mount, built around a 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor.

Canon positions this model toward aspiring photographers and enthusiasts. The practical reason is fairly clear from the spec list. It keeps the controls and automatic modes approachable, including A+ Scene Intelligent Auto and 14 scene modes, but it also adds features people usually ask for once they move past entry-level bodies, such as in-body image stabilization, Canon Log 3, a multi-controller joystick, and subject-detection autofocus.

Canon also says this is the lightest IBIS-equipped camera in the EOS lineup. The body-only weight is listed at 18 oz, or 499 g, and 19 oz, or 546 g, with battery and recording media. If you want full-frame without moving into a larger body, that is the main point of this release.

The specs that will matter in actual use

The sensor is full-frame and 24.2 megapixels. That is a familiar middle ground for people who want a camera that can handle everyday stills, travel, portraits, and general hybrid work without pushing file sizes too far. Canon lists Raw, C-RAW, JPEG, and HEIF for still image recording.

The big functional change here is in-body image stabilization. Canon rates the EOS R8 Mark II at up to 7.5 stops of coordinated IS correction at the image center. In practice, IBIS helps with handheld shooting in lower light and gives video a steadier starting point, especially if the lens also contributes stabilization.

Autofocus is Canon Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with People, Animal, and Vehicle detection, plus Register People Priority Autofocus. Canon lists 4,368 autofocus points for photos and 3,588 for video. For the person comparing spec sheets at the counter, the useful takeaway is that this camera is built to recognize common subjects automatically and gives more control over who the camera should prioritize.

Continuous shooting goes up to 40 fps at maximum resolution, with bursts rated for up to 73 Raw frames or up to 190 JPEG frames. That is the part of the spec sheet that matters for action, kids, pets, and any situation where timing is inconsistent. The electronic shutter range is listed as 1/8000 to 30 seconds.

Video, screen, media and handling

Video tops out at UHD 4K 60p, with Full HD available up to 180 fps. Canon lists internal XF-HEVC S 4:2:2 10-bit recording at 3840 x 2160 in 23.98, 25, 29.97, 50, and 59.94 fps, and 1920 x 1080 in frame rates up to 180 fps. There is also Custom Picture mode with Canon Log 3. For someone shooting both stills and video, that gives this camera a fairly broad range, from standard 4K capture to slow-motion Full HD and a log option for color grading.

Canon lists a recording limit of 2 hours maximum in 4K HFR and 6 hours maximum in 4K. Audio recording is AAC or LPCM. The screen is a 3-inch articulating touchscreen LCD with 1,620,000-dot resolution, which is the kind of screen setup people usually want for high-angle, low-angle, and front-facing work.

Storage is one UHS-II compatible SD card slot. Power comes from one included LP-E17 rechargeable battery. Flash is external only, since there is no built-in flash, and Canon lists a PC sync port plus a maximum sync speed of 1/200 second.

On the body itself, Canon calls out a new multi-controller joystick. That matters more than it sounds on a spec sheet. A joystick is simply a faster way to move an AF point or work through menus than relying only on the touchscreen or directional controls.

Body only or the 24-50mm kit

The body-only version is available to preorder for $1,899. If you already have RF lenses or already know what focal length you want, that is the simpler buy.

The kit version is available to preorder for $2,099 and includes Canon's RF 24-50mm F/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens. The lens covers a practical everyday range from moderate wide angle to short normal telephoto. Canon lists a minimum focus distance of 11.8 inches, or 30 cm, a 58mm front filter size, an 8-elements-in-8-groups optical design, and a lens weight of 7.4 oz, or 210 g.

There are no alternate colors listed here, and both versions use the Canon RF mount. So the choice is straightforward: body only at $1,899, or the 24-50mm kit at $2,099.

Where it sits in Canon's lineup from this launch

Within this launch, there are two listings and they are the same camera in two purchase options. The EOS R8 Mark II body and the EOS R8 Mark II with 24-50mm kit share the same core camera specs: 24.2-megapixel full-frame sensor, IBIS, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, UHD 4K 60p, Full HD 180p, single UHS-II SD slot, and the same body dimensions and weight figures.

The difference is only the package. The body-only version is for someone building around existing RF glass. The kit is the easier entry point if you want one box with a usable starting zoom. Since no other new Canon series are listed in this launch set, the comparison is really body versus kit, not one new camera family against another.

Canon's own language around this model points to portability and accessibility. The spec sheet supports that. It is a full-frame body with stabilization, automatic modes, subject detection, and a fairly compact footprint of 5.17 x 3.54 x 3.14 inches.
