Canon just announced two new RF mount cameras with the Canon R8 (full frame) and the R50 (APS-C) and I am extremely excited for both of them.
First, I’ve been contemplating picking up the original mirrorless Canon R camera as my second body for my kit. I’ve been feeling like I should have a secondary backup camera just in case and for a month or so now I have been kicking around picking up the original R. Now that Canon has come out and announced their new R8 which essential replaces the R I’m very excited to test it out. The R8 has a ton of capabilities and in some ways I think gains on its predecessor. Dropping the sensor from 30MP down to 24.2MP should aid in some of the low light complaints I had with the R. Additionally, the camera is significantly smaller and lighter than the original R coming in at under a pound which is almost a half pound improvement!

On top of all the great updates to the photo side of the camera, it also now includes Ibis which will greatly aid in the video sides of things with this camera! Pulling the 5-axis IS from its lineup the ability to do video has gotten way better now with the R8! The R8 also adds vertical movie mode which displays visual markers for different aspect ratios that may be desired for posting the same file to various social media sites. This display provides consideration for proper composition for the different deliverable files that can be created when editing.

The next new launch I’m super excited for is the Canon R50. This APS-C update to the EF version the M50 brings the entry level for interchangeable lenses to the RF system. The reason I’m most excited about this camera is utilizing the 4K uncropped video recording up to 30fps. I am envisioning utilizing this camera as my main driver for my podcast and it makes a lot of sense to toss this on a tripod and go to work. Lacking IBIS is ok since I’ll mostly be utilizing this for tripod work.

Aside from my uses, the camera is pretty great. 24.2 CMOS APS-C sensor in a tiny package that packs a pretty great punch for getting into the Canon mirrorless lineup of RF glass. The EOS R50 camera makes photography fun, simple, and convenient with intuitive photo functions that capture beautiful images automatically, just as you imagine them. Having the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II makes the EOS R50 a great camera for movie recording and vlogging as well. The 24.2 Megapixel APS-C size CMOS Image sensor and DIGIC X image processor ensure high image quality in a compact and lightweight form factor.
