Honey they blew up the zebrafish embryo! They, being some scientists in the Neatherlands who stitched together something like 26,000 nanoscopic images to create a 261-Gigapixel image.
Ugh, not only is this messing with my sense of scale, but it's making me feel like I'm back in Biology class...Frustratingly searching for something that looks like a mitochondria and ultimately cracking the slide by smashing into it with the high power objective. Days I'd rather not relive.
Anyway, this is important because electron microscopes, although very powerful tools at obtaining fine details at a cellular level, are very limiting in terms of getting the bigger picture (ba-dum-tssh).
By having the ability to zoom into a gigantic picture of a 1.5mm embryo, one can gain a better sense of how these sub-cellular building blocks work together as a whole.
