Seminar: The World of Nature Photography: Current Projects of David FitzSimmons - August 2nd 6:00pm-7:00pm: Sigma Pro photographer David FitzSimmons, will show images from his recent projects, everything from calendar work to new directions in impressionism. David will share wonderful waterfalls, amazing macro, beautiful landscapes, as well as adding commentary on his Curious Critters series, a prelude to Saturday’s “Curious Critters: How-To” photo workshop. Check out David’s award-wininng picture book “Curious Critters” at www.curious-critters.com

Gallery Exhibit Opening Reception - August 2nd 7:00pm-8:00pm: After David's “Current Projects” seminar, join him for an artist’s reception. Enjoy viewing the two dozen Curious Critters prints, talk with David, and pick up a signed copy five-time award-winning “Curious Critters.” Most wild animals are photographed in situ, showing logs and leaves, meadows and mountains, whatever is in their natural habitats. In the Curious Critters series, I isolate often-overlooked animals against white backgrounds to eliminate distractions, allowing viewers to pay complete attention to animals shapes, colors, textures, and postures, not to mention apparent expressions. Richard Avedon, who made white backgrounds famous for portraiture, believed that, while a black background represents something, white is complete absence. If so, such high key photography leaves only the subject to be contemplated.

Removing an animals from its wild setting seems to make it more approachable; shooting from eye level puts us and the subject on the same plane. The goal of the Curious Critters series is an affective response: I want viewers to be moved by some aspect of these animals. Then I hope that you are moved to action, to appreciate and then conserve the natural world.

Curious Critters Workshop - Saturday, Aug 3rd, 11:00am-3:00pm - To register for the workshop on the following day, please visit: http://www.uniquephoto.com/event/curious-critters-workshop-uuu181

*All animals in this exhibit have been handled carefully, not sedated, and returned safely to their habitats.
