Select a Date
One of the best storytellers of our time, Joe McNally, will teach you how to build a lighting solution, step by step, with each of those steps explained. Joe will fully examine the role of each light as he shows the building blocks of a beautifully lit portrait, as well as the thought process, so you can build upon your own “toolkit” when faced with a portrait scenario. Learn the why and the how-to of placing lights and building a lighting scenario as Joe shares his mindset from simple approaches to more sophisticated results.
Joe will kick off the day with an engaging talk and lecture, packed with behind-the-scenes stories, lessons from the field, and a candid look at both the wins and challenges of shooting on location. He will share a quick primer on managing light in unpredictable environments, followed by a new-to-lighting friendly demonstration with a live model to set the stage.
Topics include:
· Lessons from the field: what works and what does not
· Strategies for lighting on location
· Beginner friendly portrait techniques
Attendees are also encouraged to attend Joe's Light, Shadow, and Portraits Part 2 (Advanced Level) workshop!
*Check-in is at Unique Photo Philly! Please do this first before heading to the workshop location.
*This workshop takes place at the Museum of the American Revolution (~10 minutes walk from Unique Photo Philly).
*There will be a 15-minute break between the talk and live demo.

In addition to inspiring editorial work, McNally has covered FOUR Olympics for such diverse clients as ABC Television, Sports Illustrated and TIME magazine. McNally is known for his penchant to get his camera in “a different place” and has twice climbed the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, in addition to climbing the Empire State Building four times.
