FROM THE AUTHOR
“Stories Behind the Images: Lessons from a Life in Adventure Photography” is not your typical photo book. This compendium of images, captured over the course of my career as an adventure photographer and filmmaker, isn’t even a portfolio of my best work (though I am proud of many of these pictures). Instead, this book is about the amazing people, the incredible places, and the wonderful memories I have of creating these 56 pictures. I put this book together as a testament to what it means when you follow your passion. For me, that was being a 13 year old kid, picking up my dad’s camera for the first time and learning how to rock climb. What, where, and who came next … well, I wouldn’t trade that for the world."
"Rich pays homage to the power of storytelling as both a tool and an art form that can inspire and motivate and illuminate, and maybe most of all, summon a wellspring of emotions for those on either end of any given tale." — Adventure Journal
"More than a mere chronicle of the expeditions and exploits of a professional adventure photographer, however, Rich's book details how much he cares for climbing, for adventure, for the culture that surrounds the outdoors and its activities, and for its characters like Fred Beckey, Alex Honnold, Chris Sharma, and many more. Anyone who enjoys captivating imagery coupled with amazing tales of adventure would do well to get their own copy of Stories Behind the Images." — Climbing Magazine
"The book is reminiscent of the late-great chef Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, where Rich shares the secrets of his society with the greater public. Having personally traveled and worked closely with Rich for a many projects, including to South America with The North Face, I’m familiar with his tireless work ethic and subtle, fun humor; both make it into Stories Behind the Images: Lessons from a Life in Adventure Photography." — Gripped Magazine
"Interweaving stories and anecdotes with beautiful imagery and techniques, author Corey Rich takes readers behind the scenes of some of his most iconic adventure photographs. We've all seen countless guides within most genres of photography, but this book, focusing specifically on a genre that's as hard to break into as it is to teach, fills a void in the educational photography book market. If you've always dreamed of being an adventure photographer, this book will give you an idea of the type of commitment and fortitude you'll need. As a helpful bonus, images in the book include EXIF data for additional instructional context." — Fstoppers
"Epic stories from a man who has lived and worked on the edge." — Bear Grylls, survival specialist and television personality
