Will upgrading from a Canon XSi to a T2i improve long-exposure image quality for night and star-trail shots?

I currently use a Canon XSi and am seeing noticeable noise, even at ISO 100, when trying longer night exposures. I’d like to shoot star trails and also do longer time-lapse sequences, but the XSi feels limiting.

I’m considering upgrading to a Canon T2i so I can keep using my existing lenses. Will the T2i give me meaningfully better image quality for long exposures and low-light/night photography, or is the improvement only minor? If the T2i isn’t a worthwhile step up for this use, what Canon body would make more sense on a roughly $1,000 budget?

CHeck out DXOMark. These guys analyze sensors and lenses in depth. XSi sensor here: http://bit.ly/pbbRmm T2i sensor here: http://bit.ly/n6ysLR

The T2i has slightly better low light performance than the XSi, but only slightly noticeable. It also has a slight larger dynamic range than the XSi, but it is also barely noticeable.

Canon doesn't offer a camera that will perform significantly better at under $1000.

The T2i should be somewhat better than the XSi, but not dramatically so for long-exposure night work. Based on the community answers, it offers slightly better low-light performance and a bit more dynamic range, plus other general upgrades like higher resolution, better LCD, faster operation, improved AF, higher max ISO, and video.

For pure image quality in long exposures, though, the gain is described as modest—likely visible overall, but not a huge leap. At the pixel level, noise may still not look much better if you inspect files very closely.

So if your main goal is noticeably cleaner star-trail or night images, the T2i is only a small step up from the XSi. If you also want the extra features, it may still be worth it. If your priority is a more significant improvement, the community consensus suggests stretching your budget or waiting for a higher-tier Canon body rather than expecting a major jump from XSi to T2i alone.
