Will the Sigma LH-825-03 hood fit the 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Macro?

I need a replacement hood for a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Macro. I found hoods intended for the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS version, including the LH-825-03, and both lenses appear similar at the front with a 72mm filter size. Since this hood bayonets onto the outside of the lens rather than threading into the filter ring, can Sigma hoods be shared between lenses with the same filter size, or are the bayonet mounts lens-specific? A Sigma distributor told me the correct replacement for my lens is LH780-04.

Testing with two pairs of Sigma lenses shows that no hood fits on any other lens. You have to find a hood with the adequate mount. The lenses tested were:
- ⌀72mm: different generations of the 17-70mm
- ⌀77mm: 10-20mm vs 120-400mm

Sigma bayonet hoods are generally lens-specific, even when lenses share the same filter size. Community testing across multiple Sigma lenses found that hoods did not interchange between different models, including lenses with the same 72mm size. That’s because the hood mount and fit are determined by the outer barrel and bayonet shape, not just the filter diameter.
So the LH-825-03 for the 17-50mm OS should not be assumed compatible with the 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Macro. If a Sigma distributor identified LH780-04 as the correct replacement, that is the hood to look for.
