Will the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM work properly on an EOS 300 film camera?

I have a Canon EOS 300 film SLR and want an inexpensive faster prime to supplement the kit lens. The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM seems attractive because it is still available new and I could also adapt it for use on an EOS M200.
My concern is compatibility with the STM focus-by-wire design on an older film body. Since the EOS 300 autofocus can struggle in low light, I may sometimes need to switch to manual focus. Are there any problems or limitations using the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM on an EOS 300, especially for manual-focus fallback?

It looks like Ken Rockwell tried it with everything up to an EOS 620. it looks like it has some quirks with certain focus settings, but if you flip the switch on the lens it should mostly just work.

Yes — it should generally work on the EOS 300.
Based on reported use of the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM on even older Canon EOS film bodies, compatibility is mostly fine. There may be some quirks with certain focus settings, but in normal use the lens should function properly.
The main thing to know is that STM lenses use electronic manual focus behavior rather than a fully mechanical focus ring. If autofocus struggles, manual-focus fallback should still be possible, but you may need to use the lens’ AF/MF switch rather than expecting traditional full-time mechanical manual focus.
So for an EOS 300, the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a reasonable choice, with the caveat that manual focus handling may feel a bit different from older non-STM EF lenses.
