I’m planning to place two or three flashes on a stage and trigger them from the back of the room using a Canon ST-E2 on camera. I’m considering Yongnuo YN-565EX flashes set as optical slaves and want to know whether they will support TTL metering in this setup. I’m also concerned about how reliable this may be over distance or in a live event environment. If this setup isn’t dependable, are there better alternatives in a similar budget range?

Off-brand is off-brand, and compatibility/reliability are always a little bit hit-and-miss. When it hits, you're golden, but there's always a question of forward-compatibility, so what works wonderfully today may not work tomorrow. Still, if you can save something on the order of $500/unit, expediency today may make a lot more sense than 100% compatibility with your next camera.
