Will a Sigma 50-500mm EX DG HSM (non-OS) autofocus on a Nikon D90?

I bought a Sigma 50-500mm EX DG HSM (non-OS) for Nikon and mounted it on my Nikon D90. The lens fits, but autofocus does not work. Is this lens supposed to be compatible with the D90, or is it only for full-frame Nikon DSLRs? If AF should work, could this indicate a fault or a Sigma firmware issue?

Sounds like you got sold a lemon. It should work just fine, if it won't focus either the motors are broken and/or the other electronics are causing trouble with the camera's autofocus system.

Yes. The Sigma 50-500mm EX DG HSM for Nikon should be compatible with a Nikon D90, and it is not limited to full-frame bodies. If autofocus is not working, the most likely causes are either a problem with the lens/electronics or an older Sigma firmware version that needs updating. Early Sigma lenses sometimes had compatibility issues with newer camera bodies until they were rechipped or updated. So the issue is not that the D90 is APS-C; AF should work if the lens is functioning properly and has the correct firmware.
