Why won’t my HP Deskjet print correctly on glossy photo paper?

I’m trying to print on 240 gsm glossy inkjet photo paper with an HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3525. The output looks wrong when printing on this glossy paper, even after selecting photo-paper settings such as “HP Everyday Photo Paper, Glossy” and “Other photo papers.” What should I check to make glossy photo paper print properly in this printer?

This turns out to have a simple, non-technical, amusing answer: I was loading the paper upside down. The glossy side should be face down, but I'd loaded it face up. Once I fixed that, it started working.

The likely issue is that the paper is loaded on the wrong side. With this printer, the printable glossy/coated side needs to face the print path correctly—in this case, loading it upside down caused the problem. Once the paper was flipped so the printer printed on the coated glossy side, it worked normally.

If you see this again, check:

  • which side of the paper is the printable coated side
  • the paper-loading diagram for your printer tray
  • that a photo/glossy media setting is selected

Glossy inkjet paper usually only accepts ink properly on its coated side; printing on the back or uncoated side can cause very poor results.
