Why won't my Canon 580EX II fire remotely when set as a wireless master?

I'm trying to use a Canon 580EX II as a master and a 430EX as a slave. The 580EX II will fire when triggered remotely in normal mode, but as soon as I switch it to Master mode, it no longer works, so I can't get the master/slave setup working. What am I missing, and how should this be set up correctly?

The 580exII needs to be attached to your camera to be able to trigger things remotely as a master.

If you want to trigger both, you need to have another 580exII, ST-E2 wireless transmitter or use the built in transmitter that comes with the 60D or 7D.

On Canon's optical wireless system, a 580EX II only works as a master when it is mounted on the camera hot shoe. In Master mode it is meant to control slave flashes, not be used as a remotely triggered off-camera master by itself.

So if your 580EX II is off-camera and triggered remotely, switching it to Master mode will not work the way you expect. To use a 430EX as a slave, the master device needs to be on the camera.

Typical working setups are:

  • 580EX II on the camera as master, 430EX off-camera as slave
  • A dedicated Canon-compatible transmitter on the camera
  • A camera body with a built-in optical master/transmitter function

If you want both flashes off-camera, you'll need a different triggering approach or another compatible on-camera master/transmitter.
