Why won’t autofocus engage on my Nikon 200–500mm f/5.6E on a D810?

My new Nikon 200–500mm f/5.6E will not autofocus on my Nikon D810. AF is enabled on both the lens and camera, the lens is fully seated and locked, and there are no error messages. Other lenses autofocus normally on this body. The lens makes no AF sound and shows no focus movement at all. I am not using a teleconverter or extension tube. What should I check?

I have no answer but perhaps you will find helpful information in the responses to a similar post on the forum at DP-Review. you can click here to read the post
The answers give several possibile causes for your issue, like:
- camera firmware version (upgrade it)
- lock on setting (try setting it to 1 or 2 or off)
The responses also give suggestions of things you can do to eliminate problem areas like looking up the serial number of the lens at the nikon web site.
Btw: In another post I read that there can be contact problems between lens and camera body; (check how the lens performs with a different body same camera settings).
I Hope you can solve it, good luck.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
If other lenses autofocus normally on your D810, the issue is likely specific to the 200–500mm lens, lens-body communication, or compatibility settings.
Based on the suggestions provided, check these first:
- Update your camera firmware. A firmware mismatch can affect operation with newer lenses.
- Try changing the AF lock-on setting to 1, 2, or off, to rule out a focus-setting interaction.
- Clean and inspect the electrical contacts on both the lens and camera mount, then remount the lens carefully.
- Test the lens on another compatible Nikon body, if possible. That helps determine whether the problem is the lens or the D810/lens combination.
- Check the lens serial number on Nikon’s support site in case there is a service notice or known issue.
Since the lens shows no AF movement or sound at all, that points more toward communication or a lens fault than a normal focusing difficulty. If firmware, settings, and contact checks do not help, the lens may need inspection or service.
