Why is my Nikon D3100 showing horizontal lines in some photos?

My Nikon D3100 intermittently records horizontal lines along the long edge of the frame. It happens with multiple lenses, including a Sigma 70-200mm and Nikon 18-55mm and 35mm lenses, so it does not seem lens-specific. It also happens with different SD cards from SanDisk and Kingston, so the card is unlikely to be the cause. The issue appears in some images but not others, and can range from a few lines to many, causing a significant number of unusable shots. Has anyone seen this before, and is there a known fix?

It looks like a clear example of sensor damage. My old friend's Nikon got something similar.

You need to contact Nikon service to get your camera fixed. There isn't anything you can do yourself, nor should you attempt any repairs as you might lose the warranty, or cause further damage only increasing repair costs.

Because the problem appears with multiple lenses and multiple SD cards, the most likely cause is the camera body rather than the lens or card. Based on the community replies, this looks like a sensor or internal camera electronics fault. One reply specifically identified it as likely sensor damage, and another noted it tends to show up more in low light or burst shooting, which can make an intermittent body fault easier to notice.

The practical solution is to have Nikon service inspect and repair the camera. There is no reliable user fix, and opening or attempting repair yourself could worsen the damage or affect warranty/service options.

In short: if the lines are repeatable across lenses and cards, send the D3100 in for service.
