Why does the Fujifilm X100F screen flicker on a half-press in single-point AF?

On my Fujifilm X100F, the live view flickers when I half-press the shutter in single-point autofocus, even when I keep focusing on the same subject repeatedly. The photos themselves look fine, but I’m trying to understand whether this behavior is normal. I don’t remember seeing it on my X70 or X100T. Is this caused by the X100F’s autofocus system or by certain lighting conditions?

Recent Fujifilm cameras use a hybrid Phase-Detect and Contrast-Detect AF system. What you are seeing is the Contrast-Detect loop which causes the lens to move back and forth in order to confirm the distance of highest contrast.

If there is a stronger flickering indoors it could be due to the cycling of lights, mostly fluorescent that go on and off at 60 or 50Hz. With a very fast readout, this is much more noticeable than on earlier Fujifilm cameras since each read of the sensor takes a shorter time and catches the flickering.

Yes—this can be normal on the X100F. It uses a hybrid autofocus system that combines phase-detect and contrast-detect AF. What you’re likely seeing on a half-press is the contrast-detect confirmation step, where the lens makes small adjustments to verify the point of highest contrast, which can make the live view appear to flicker.

Indoor lighting can make this more obvious. Fluorescent and some other artificial lights cycle at 50Hz or 60Hz, and the X100F’s faster sensor readout can reveal that flicker more clearly than older models like the X70 or X100T.

If your images are sharp and exposure looks normal, this behavior is generally not a fault. It’s usually just the AF confirmation process and/or the camera showing flicker from the lighting.
