Why does my SDHC card disappear from my computer a few minutes after I insert it?

An SDHC card from my camera appears normally on my computer, but after a few minutes it disappears from the file system. I’ve already tried formatting the card, using a different card reader, and changing the USB port, but the problem remains. What could cause this, and how can I stop it from happening?

You don't say what operating system or software you are using, but here is my suspicion: some program is configured to detect the insertion of a memory card and to look on that card for new images to import. When you insert the card, it does this, and then automatically unmounts the card so it can be safely removed.

If you don't want this, you can probably find the offending program and configure it to not run on card insertion. Alternatively, you could leave that feature active but see if the software has a configuration options to disable unmounting after import.

A likely cause is not the card itself, but software on your computer. Some photo import or media management programs automatically detect a memory card, scan or import new images, and then unmount/eject the card when finished.

Since changing the card reader, USB port, and formatting the card didn’t help, check whether your operating system or an installed photo app is set to auto-run when removable media is inserted. Look for settings related to:

  • automatic photo import
  • actions on memory card insertion
  • eject/unmount after import

If you find the program, disable auto-launch for memory cards or turn off automatic unmount/eject after import.

If the problem only happens on one computer, that strongly points to software settings on that machine rather than a faulty card.
