Why does my Nikon D7000 show “Err” and flap the mirror without taking a photo?

My Nikon D7000 won’t take a picture. When I press the shutter, the mirror flips up and down noisily, but no photo is taken and the top display shows “Err.” The command dials also don’t seem to respond. What usually causes this, and what should I check first?

This is most likely a power issue. If the battery supplies inadequate voltage to the camera, the camera may fail to do all tasks necessary to take a photo - and opening the shutter is one of the more power-intensive tasks.

If the battery was not already fully charged, charge it and try again. If that fails, buy a new battery for it, charge it fully, and try it again. If you are lucky, a camera store nearby may have a battery that fits that you can use for testing. (If so, buy your battery there, if your test is successful, as thanks to the store for letting you experiment.)

A likely cause is a power problem. If the battery voltage is too low or the battery is failing, the camera may start the shooting cycle but not complete it, which can trigger an “Err” message. The shutter/mirror mechanism needs relatively high power, so weak battery performance can show up this way.

First, fully charge the battery and try again. If the problem remains, test with another known-good, fully charged battery if possible. Also check the camera’s manual for the meaning of the “Err” display, since Nikon uses it for several issues, including low battery voltage or a memory-card-related problem.

If a fresh battery and basic checks don’t solve it, consult Nikon support or a repair center, as the camera may need service.
