Why does my Nikon D300 sound different when shooting RAW vs JPEG?

On my Nikon D300, the shutter sounds different depending on whether I shoot RAW or JPEG, even at the same shutter speed in Manual mode. In RAW, I hear two more distinct sounds, while in JPEG it sounds quicker and more like a single sound. Does RAW take longer because it has more data to process, and is that why the camera sounds different?

This is an effect of being in 14 bit RAW mode - It takes longer to process the data from the sensor, which leads to a slight mechanical delay in the mirror / shutter mechanism (exact reason unknown)
Switch to 12 bit and it will take the same time to process as a JPG
Although in the spirit of pure quality 14 bit would be preferred if speed is not an issue.

Yes — on the D300 this can happen, especially when shooting 14-bit RAW. The camera has more sensor data to process than with JPEG, and that can introduce a slight delay in the camera’s cycle, making the shutter/mirror sounds seem more separated.
It’s not that the exposure time itself is changing if your shutter speed is the same. What changes is the time the camera takes to complete the capture/processing sequence, so the overall sound can seem slower or more distinct.
A community answer notes that switching from 14-bit RAW to 12-bit RAW makes it behave more like JPEG in terms of speed. So if you want maximum responsiveness, JPEG or 12-bit RAW may sound and feel faster; if you want the highest image quality and don’t mind a small speed penalty, 14-bit RAW is preferable.
